thanks guys! today she only hit a few doorways so far, and its 545am.  she did manage to sleep all night with just one wake up at 2am.

I am mostly concerned about her water intake, she does not drink with the cone so we have to take it off for supper and try to get a days worth of water into her then!

probably why she was up at 2 am....

Hope she is doing better.  Have you tried a taller water dish so that the cone doesn't hit the floor or so that she doesn't have to bend down as far with it on.  I know when our dog had the cone on we ended up getting a gallon milk jug and cutting the very top off of it and then filling it all the way full and keeping it full so that she could drink comfortablely out of it.  She didn't like having the cone hit the floor or feeling I'm guessing trapped when drinking.  The milk jug brought it up to closer to her height so that she could just drink almost straight across.  It might work by putting her dish up on a stool or raised platform too.  Might save you from having to have all the drinking all at once.  And as much late nights too.

The poor girl. Sorry to hear she had to have an operation.. Hope it wasn't too serious, and that it was successful. She couldn't have better carers right now.

 Lucy.

You can make the cone smaller catty. My dog has had to wear a cone for a few times now.

First you can thread it on to a normal colar, this will help to stop it from rubbing her kneck too much.

You can put the tabs into different holes so that the cone is not so wide.

You can trim the length of the cone with a good utility knife or scissors. ( that is the distance from the kneck to about 2 inches in front of her nose.)

This will be more comfortable for her, and I alwats removed the cone at meal times ( and cleaned it ) until I couldn't watch him closely anymore, then it has to go back on..

thanks 007, good advice. I do take it off at meals. the vet suggested duct tape around rim if it cracks......yes my skittish dog would love having her vision impaired.

thanks marthasc...I tried the jug idea she still freaks out, but it was a great idea. now looking for s stool for bowl . good news is, outside for a pee, she can be made to drink if i offer a treaty. win-lose lol

while eating banana bits one got lost in the cone and made a nice mash in her neck fur.

my other dog, Jack,  tried to help by going in after it.

How shall I describe the noise??????? Tongue

Poor Lucy and poor you - you can't help but feel bad for them with the cone but it truly is the safer option. I had to cone my cat because she would undo the finishing knot for her stitches and pull them out and I'd end up with a long piece of string sitting o the floor wondering where it came from.

Won't be long before she's back to her usual self!
